How to choose an Edelrid harness for tree care and work at height
Pick the harness by task first. Tree work means long hours hanging in the harness and moving around the canopy, so comfort and a sliding attachment point matter most. The TreeRex Triple Lock harness and the TreeRex Bungee Chest are built for that. If the work is mostly access and positioning with less time in suspension, the Flex Lite harness and the Vector Chest X are the lighter options to compare. Whatever you choose, check the size range and the CE marking on the product page. A harness that sits correctly on the hips and thighs matters more than any single feature.
For fall arrest on industrial sites, compare these with our full range of safety harnesses. Fall arrest harnesses are covered by EN 361, work positioning belts by EN 358, and energy absorbers by EN 355. Rope access and tree care gear is often rated to other standards, so confirm that the standard on the label matches your job and your employer's risk assessment.
Helmets: Tectum and the standards that matter
Helmets for climbers and arborists are not all the same. Industrial helmets are tested to EN 397. Helmets for mountaineering and rope work follow EN 12492. Which one you need depends on the hazard, such as falling branches, impact from the side or sparks. Read the standards printed on the helmet and confirm them on the product page, because they can differ between versions. The Edelrid Tectum-Air is also sold in Hi-Vis Yellow. Carabiners, slings and rope: matching the connectors
An HMS carabiner is the pear-shaped type used for knots, belaying and anchors. The HMS Bulletproof TL and the HMS Strike Screw are examples. Safety carabiners for work at height are tested to EN 362, and climbing carabiners to EN 12275. Choose a locking gate (screw or triple-lock) for any life-support connection. Keep in mind that the strength of a carabiner is rated along the major axis, with the gate closed. Cross-loading cuts that strength a lot.
For slings, Edelrid's 25 mm webbing slings come in several lengths and colours, which makes it easy to tell them apart on a rack. For rope, the Hotline 60 m is a climbing rope for tree work, and you should check its diameter and rating on the product page before ordering. Tree climbing spurs, ascenders and descenders
The Talon with long spikes and the Talon with short spikes are climbing spurs for tree removal and pruning. Long gaffs suit thick bark and pines, and short gaffs suit thin bark and trees you intend to keep, since spurs damage the cambium. Replacement spikes are sold separately in long and short versions. Inspection, service life and training
Inspect every item before each use. Check webbing for cuts and glazing, stitching for broken threads, carabiner gates for smooth locking, and helmets for cracks. In the EU, PPE used for work at height should also be examined in detail by a competent person at least every 12 months. Retire any harness or sling after a serious fall. Service life depends on use, so follow the manufacturer's instructions. Edelrid has made rope and textile gear in Isny im Allgäu, Germany since 1863, and its manuals are the source for limits on each product.
