Waterproof Ratings - The higher the number, the better water resistance
In the case of 10,000mm fabric, if you put a square tube with inner dimensions of 1-inch over a piece of fabric, you could fill it with water to a height of 10,000mm before water would begin to leak through. Essentially, the higher the waterproof rating of a fabric, the longer it can remain waterproof.
5,000mm: This is the minimum rating for a trouser to be called rainproof, however, it won’t stand up to much more than a light shower. E.g. Rain jacket
10,000mm – 15,000mm: Many Blaklader Waterproof Work Jackets fall into this range. A garment in this range will withstand most downpours as well as heavy snow, but will soak through over time if subjected to pressure, such as crashing in wet snow, kneeling or sitting down, or a heavy pack. E.g. Warm Waterproof Jacket, Hi-vis Softshell Jacket and Lightweight Waterproof Jacket
20,000mm and Up: This is the rating you should look for if you plan to be out in all conditions carrying a heavy load.
