Retractable Cable Fall Arrester - ExForz2

As a connecting device in a fall arrest system, the retractable fall arrester ExForz2 is equipped with a zinc galvanized steel cable kept in tension. It connects a full-body harness to an anchorage point, shown in the ABC fall protection diagram, to catch a fall. A retractable fall arrester (or known as SRL) is usually used for these professions: works on a facade, on the terrace, on scaffolding, on an aerial lift, and maintenance.

This new version of fall arrester features an anchor with a built-in swivel to prevent twisting and untwisting.

  • Swivel Hook with a built-in fall indicator: The swivel prevents twisting and untwisting of the lifeline as a result of the user turning repeatedly during the work.
  • Handle for easy transporting and anchoring to structure
  • Size: Available in 4 lengths - 6m, 10m, 12m, and 15m
  • Fall arrester rope: Zinc Galvanized Steel
  • Fall arrester rope dia: 4mm
  • Weight of the hook: 220g
  • Opening of the hook: 24mm
  • Standard: All FA2 retractors conform to EN 360:2002 -PPE against falls from a height -retractable type fall arresters

    FAQs about Fall Arrest

What is a retractable fall arrester?

Retractable fall arresters are also known as 'fall arrest blocks’ in Europe and ‘self-retracting lifelines’ (SRLs) in North America. It follows the movements of a user - extends as he/she moves away and retracts as the user walks back. It acts as a connecting device (C), working in conjunction with a body harness (B) and anchor (A) in a fall arrest system.

In the event of a fall where the cable pulls out at an excessive speed, the braking mechanism immediately engages and arrests the fall, protecting the user from falling to the ground.

What are the advantages of Retractable Fall Arrester?

The retractable fall arresters are ideal for work of low-rise because the braking mechanism is almost instantaneous, reducing the required fall distance clearance. Take an example of a 6-foot tall worker, only 12.5 feet of fall distance clearance is required when using a retractable fall arrester while 17.5 feet is required when using a 6-foot lanyard.

Also, it brings great freedom of movements. Many fall protection professionals therefore tend to recommend retractable fall arrester over lanyards.

What is a Fall Arrest System?

This system, a form of fall protection, allows workers to have maximum freedom of movement but also allows them to reach the point where a fall may occur, such as the edge of a roof. When it happens, the fall arrest system stops a person already falling from colliding with the ground, structure, or any other obstacle during a free fall and limits the impact force on the worker during fall arrest. In order to achieve the result, a collection of safety equipment conforming to the required standards, used in conjunction with each other to ensure the safety of a worker.

What are the Main Components a Fall Arrest System?

According to OSHA, a fall arrest system should include:

Other protective equipment like Hard Hat with Visor and Kask Helmets should be considered.

What attachment point can I use with retractable equipment?

The front or rear fall arrest attachment point can be used, although rear attachment is usually preferred, so the cable is out of the way of the user whilst working.

What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?

In a fall arrest situation, the fall has occurred already. A fall arrest system is used to stop a person from further falling and reaching the ground to minimize the impact on the body to a lower level. The fall arrest lanyard has energy absorption capability.

This system is usually applied when people are working near a fragile surface, narrow ledge or unusual building or roof shape and are using lanyards or a rope. There is a good chance of falling off or into the building.

       fall restraint vs fall arrest
      Fall Restraint vs Fall Arrest

A fall restraint system, however, is used to prevent a fall from happening. In this case, the fall restraint would typically be provided by a fixed-length lanyard and a body harness or body belt. The fall restraint lanyard without energy absorption is to prevent the person from reaching the leading edge.

A fall restraint system should be the choice for work on flat or near-flat roofs. It should also be used when the free fall distance is limited like low building height that reduces the available height to have a fall arrested safely. Work restraint is preferred over a fall arrest situation because the former is a preventive measure as the connecting device can prevent users from reaching a position from where a fall could occur.
