Personal protective equipment (PPE) for height safety is the foundation of every safe work at height operation. Whether you are arresting a fall, restraining a worker from a fall hazard, positioning yourself for hands free work, or performing a rope access or rescue task, the right combination of harness, connector and anchor saves lives. EU workplaces must comply with the EU PPE Regulation 2016/425 and follow EN standards for each piece of equipment.

Build a complete fall protection system

A complete personal fall protection system has three core parts: an anchor point, a body wearing device, and a connector between them. In practice, this means:

  • Anchorage: a fixed structural anchor, anchor line or temporary anchor sling rated to take the load of a fall.
  • Body wearing device: a full body safety harness that distributes fall forces across the thighs, pelvis, waist, chest and shoulders.
  • Connector: a lanyard with energy absorber, a self retracting lifeline, or a rope grab on a vertical lifeline, joined by carabiners and connectors.

Head, eye, ear and hand protection

Working at height usually means working alongside other hazards. A compliant safety helmet with a chin strap (EN 12492 for work at height, EN 397 for industrial) protects the head against impact and falling objects. Compliance and care

All PPE has a service life and must be inspected before each use. A harness or connector that has arrested a fall, or that shows any sign of damage, must be removed from service immediately. As a general industry guideline based on the historical ANSI/ASSE A10.32 standard, many users follow a service life of around five years, although actual lifespan depends on the manufacturer guidance, use, care and storage.
