Key Clamps for Handrails and Barriers

Key clamps are a modular, Kee Klamp-style fitting system that connects tube without welding or specialist tools, ideal for handrails, barriers and lightweight structural frames that need to go up and come down quickly. The range covers straight joints, such as the Doughty Short Tee and Long Tee, corner and angle fittings like the 90-Degree Elbow and 3-Way 90-Degree Elbow, and base fittings including the Base Flange and Railing Base Flange for anchoring a structure to the floor. Where a rail needs to rotate rather than sit fixed, the Swivel Tee/Socket and Swivel Base allow angled connections that a fixed key clamp can't accommodate.

Scaffolding Clamps

For scaffold tube joins under higher load, the Scaffold Double Coupler and Scaffold Swivel Clamps connect tubes at fixed or variable angles, available in drop forged or pressed steel depending on load requirements. The Pipe to Pipe Coupler joins tube end to end in 38mm or 48mm sizes, and the Solid Steel Tube Joiner gives a rigid internal join rather than an external clamp. A Scaffold Spanner is the correct tool for tightening these fittings to their rated torque.

Tubes and Barrels

The Doughty Aluminium Tube/Barrel (48mm diameter) is stocked in 1m, 1.5m and 2m lengths, with 3m and 4m lengths available on request, giving the raw tube stock needed to build custom truss, barrier or support structures with key clamp or scaffold fittings. The Tube/Barrel Joiner extends tube length without a visible external clamp, useful where a cleaner finish matters, such as on visible barrier runs.

Pipe Fittings for Stage Lighting Rigs

Beyond structural tube, this range includes fittings built specifically for lighting rigs: the Modular Drop Arm Tee (100kg WLL) drops a lighting position below the main tube run, the Lantern Tee Bar mounts 2, 4 or 6 lanterns on a single fitting, and the Standard Pantograph, available from 2.2m to 5m, raises and lowers lighting positions for access without a ladder. For moving equipment along a tube run, the Standard Barrel Trolley and Braked Barrel Trolley (75kg WLL) roll along 48-51mm tube and accept a 28mm TV spigot for mounting lighting or camera equipment.

Choosing the Right Fitting

Key clamps suit lightweight, non-structural work like handrails and barriers where quick assembly matters more than maximum load. Scaffold clamps and couplers are rated for higher loads and suit structural tube joins on staging frames and rigs. If you're building a lighting position rather than a structural frame, look at the dedicated fittings, drop arm tees, pantographs and lantern bars, rather than adapting a generic key clamp or scaffold coupler for the job.
